Do you know how a “sandwich” began? It was invented by a very rich and powerful man, Earl of Sandwich. He liked playing card games with his friends. [   ] So, he could eat with his hands. This is a beginning of a “sandwich”. Now, people all over the world eat sandwiches.

We are going to visit Midori Kindergarten and hold a Christmas party for the children. What shall we do for them? Tell me about your idea, Alex.

みどり幼稚園を訪問し、子どもたちのためにクリスマス会を開きます。子供たちのために何をしましょうか？アレックス、あなたのアイディアを聞かせて。

Alex : 
OK. Let’s start the party with a surprise. The children will not know anything about the party. Then, [①]

I love your idea of gift-giving, but I’m worried that some of the children may have food allergies.
If so, we must think of something else, like small toys, picture books, or pencils. I will ask their teacher, Ms. Green, about that.

プレゼントを贈るというアイデアはとてもいいのですが、食物アレルギーを持つ子どもたちがいるのではないかと心配しています。
もしそうなら、小さなおもちゃや絵本、鉛筆など、何か別のものを考えなければなりません。担任のグリーン先生に聞いてみます。

Alex:

People had the never-ending wish to i and see the world from the sky. They watched birds in the sky for hundreds of years. They had the dream of flying like birds. • It is quite easy for birds to fly in the sky. Birds can fly through the air by using their wings. Some people thought, “If birds can stay up in the air, maybe we can!”

人々は空から世界を見たいと願ってやまなかった。彼らは何百年もの間、空を飛ぶ鳥を見てきた。鳥のように空を飛びたいという夢があった。- 鳥が空を飛ぶのは簡単だ。鳥は翼を使って空を飛ぶことができる。鳥が空を飛べるのなら、私たちにもできるかもしれない！」と考える人もいた。

At first, they made wings like birds. Many people jumped from high places and tried to fly, but they all fell straight to the ground and got hurt. After many tries, people knew that flying with wings wasn’t [    ], so they stopped trying.

最初は鳥のように翼を作った。多くの人が高いところから飛び降りて空を飛ぼうとしたが、みんな地面に落ちて怪我をした。何度も試した後、人々は翼で飛ぶことが[ ]でないことを知り、試すのをやめた。

Two Frenchmen, the Montgolfier brothers, tried another way. Can you guess? They invented hot air balloons.
“Hot air goes up because it is lighter than cold air,” they said. “If we fill a balloon with hot air, it will go up.” In June 1783, they built a large balloon of cloth and paper. They made a fire under the balloon. The balloon began to go up into the air! It went up 1,800 meters, stayed in the air for ten minutes, and traveled about two kilometers. Then, the air inside the balloon became cool. It came down slowly, and finally reached the ground.

二人のフランス人、モンゴルフィエ兄弟は別の方法を試みた。わかるだろうか？彼らは熱気球を発明した。

In September 1783 in Paris, the brothers sent up another balloon in front of the king and the queen of France. This time there was a basket under the balloon. There were three animals in the basket.
The balloon traveled two and a half kilometers away. It didn’t go up as high as the first one. The balloon left the ground, and went up, 600 meters into the air. It slowly came back to the earth eight minutes later after traveling. It was a great success. The animals on the balloon came back without any problems.

1783年9月、パリで兄弟はフランス国王と王妃の前で別の気球を飛ばした。今度は気球の下にバスケットがあった。バスケットの中には3匹の動物が入っていた。
気球は2.5キロ先まで飛んだ。最初の気球ほど高くは上がらなかった。気球は地面を離れ、上空600メートルまで上昇した。そして8分後、ゆっくりと地上に戻ってきた。大成功だった。気球に乗った動物たちは何の問題もなく戻ってきた。

Next, the Montgolfier brothers looked for a man to send up. They found a school teacher. In October 1783, he rose above the ground. This time the balloon did not rise very far. It went up only 90 meters and stopped. It was tied to the ground by a rope, so it could not fly away.

次に、モンゴルフィエ兄弟は送り出す人を探した。そして見つけたのが学校の教師だった。1783年10月、彼は地上を上昇した。この時、気球はあまり上がらなかった。わずか90メートル上昇して止まった。ロープで地面に縛られていたので、飛び立つことはできなかった。

Finally, the first 3 free balloon flight was in November 1783. This time two Frenchmen went up in a balloon without rope. The balloon went up 900 meters and flew for twenty-five minutes. It traveled about nine kilometers. It was the first time for people to travel through the air. Half of people living in Paris watched it. The news of the balloon spread all over the warld, and balloons became very popular in Paris. People call hot air balloons “montgolfière” in French after the name of the Montgolfier brothers.

最後に、1783年11月、最初の3回の気球飛行が行われた。この時、2人のフランス人がロープなしで気球に乗った。気球は900メートル上昇し、25分間飛行した。飛行距離は約9キロ。人が空を飛ぶのは初めてのことだった。パリに住む人々の半数がそれを見た。気球のニュースは世界中に広まり、気球はパリで大人気となった。人々はモンゴルフィエ兄弟の名前にちなんで、フランス語で熱気球を「モンゴルフィエール」と呼ぶ。
