For a long time, Carrie dreamed of being in the school band, and now her dream was finally coming true! She loved watching her older sister in parades and concerts. Carrie couldn’t quite believe that she was going to be a part of that at last. She knew that being in the school band took a lot of work and dedication, but she also felt like she was ready to accept that challenge.

長い間、キャリーは学校のバンドに入ることを夢見ていた！姉のパレードやコンサートを見るのが大好きだった。キャリーは、ついに自分もその一員になれるということが信じられなかった。スクールバンドに入るには多くの努力と献身が必要なことは知っていたが、彼女はその挑戦を受け入れる準備ができているとも感じていた。

Carrie chose the Clarinet as her instrument, and her mother thought that it would be a good idea for Carrie to take a few lessons before school started If she does that, she could at least learn to read music and get started on the basics of clarinet playing. The high school offered music lessons for beginners, so Carrie’s mom signed her up. Carrie was quite excited about this chance.

キャリーが選んだ楽器はクラリネットで、母親はキャリーが学校が始まる前に何回かレッスンを受けるのがいいだろうと考えた。高校には初心者向けの音楽レッスンがあったので、キャリーの母親は彼女にレッスンを申し込んだ。キャリーはこのチャンスにかなり興奮していた。

When the time came for her first lesson, Carrie made sure that her new clarinet was in its case and ready to go. She was nervous. She really wanted to do a good job and make her sister proud of her. [ A ]

Carrie and Mrs. Williams went into the practice room next to the office and sat down behind a large, black music stand.

Mrs. Williams said that was normal for beginners. She promised that Carrie would get better with practice. They continued to work together until the lesson was over, and Carrie agreed to practice every day. Carrie’s mom arrived at the practice room. Carrie thanked Mrs.

Williams and told her that she would see her next week. Carrie was very glad that she started lessons and was feeling much more confident about her chances of getting into the school band.

As the weeks passed, Carrie practiced her clarinet hard every day. She could feel herself improving. One Saturday morning, Carrie’s sister, Sarah, came into her room and asked her to play the clarinet. Carrie hesitated but agreed. She took a deep breath and then began to play a simple tune she was working on. Sarah listened with full attention while she was nodding. When Carrie finished, Sarah clapped and hugged her. “You’re doing great, Carrie! I’m so proud of you,” Sarah said with smile.

数週間が経ち、キャリーは毎日クラリネットの練習に励んだ。彼女は自分が上達していくのを感じていた。ある土曜日の朝、キャリーの妹のサラが部屋に入ってきて、クラリネットを吹いてみないかと誘った。キャリーはためらいながらも承諾した。彼女は深呼吸をしてから、取り組んでいた簡単な曲を吹き始めた。サラはうなずきながら全神経を集中させて聴いていた。キャリーが演奏を終えると、サラは拍手をして彼女を抱きしめた。「よくやった、キャリー！誇りに思うわ」とサラは笑顔で言った。

Carrie was really happy. Her sister’s approval was the most important to her.

As the first day of school was getting closer, Carrie felt a mix of excitement and nerves. She was ready to show herself and everyone else that she could be a valuable member of the school band.

People love dogs. Dogs have been used in a number of different ways. Dogs have been so useful to humans. And they have also become our friends. Many people today have dogs as pets.

人は犬が大好きだ。犬はさまざまな形で利用されてきた。犬は人間の役に立ってきた。そして、私たちの友達にもなってきた。今日、多くの人が犬をペットとして飼っている。

Many pet dogs ( ① ) their days sleeping around the house. They play catch with their owners. They receive all of their meals from their owners. Pet dogs give their owners love and friendship. In return, the dogs live peaceful lives. Pet dogs can sleep and play at any time they want.

Service dogs have to work hard, but they enjoy what they do. Because their work can be stressful, the owners ( 3 ) care to keep them happy. To do that, they give the dogs lots of love and say good things when they do well. This makes the dogs happy and want to work more.

Dogs have been stars in many children’s books. A very big red hound named Clifford is the star of the book Clifford, the Big Red Dog. Children around the world love this kind dog. いつも問題を起こすベートーベンだが、家族は彼を愛している。オールド・イェラー』は、犬と少年の強い友情を描いた物語だ。オールド・イェラーはトラヴィスとその家族にとても優しいので、子供たちは大好きだ。
