One big event in my life was the Great East Japan
Earthquake. I was 16 years old when I experienced it in Sendai.
When I saw the photos of the tsunami areas, I felt very, very sad.
I will never forget it. I also felt scared because the disaster took away everything so quickly. I didn’t feel safe in my
everyday life. I couldn’t use the ice-skating rink, and I couldn’t think about skating.
Then, people came to support me. They came from a lot of places. They gave me a place to practice. I was glad to receive their help. I was able to continue skating because of my supporters.
Now I feel thankful every day. I always work hard and do my best.

私の人生における大きな出来事のひとつは、東日本大震災だった。
震災だ。16歳のときに仙台で経験した。
津波被災地の写真を見たとき、とてもとても悲しい気持ちになりました。
一生忘れることはないでしょう。また、震災はあっという間にすべてを奪ってしまったので、怖さも感じました。日常生活も安心できませんでした。
日常生活も安心できなかった。スケートリンクも使えなかったし、スケートのことも考えられなかった。
そんなとき、応援してくれる人たちがいた。いろんなところから来てくれた。練習場所を提供してくれた。それが嬉しかった。応援してくれる人がいたから、スケートを続けることができた。
今は毎日、感謝の気持ちでいっぱいです。いつも一生懸命、ベストを尽くしています。

When you were a third-year high school student, you started to train in Canada. Were you good at communicating in English?

高校3年生のとき、カナダで修行を始めましたね。英語でのコミュニケーションは得意でしたか？

It was really difficult! At first, when my coach spoke, I couldn’t understand. I couldn’t tell him my opinions in English.
When I didn’t know a word, I used gestures. Sometimes I made mistakes, but I continued to try.
Now I can communicate with my coach somehow. When I want to say something to him, I can say it in English. On the other hand, my English is still limited. I sometimes feel I should learn more English.

本当に難しかった！最初はコーチが話しても理解できなかった。自分の意見を英語で伝えることができなかった。
単語がわからないときは、ジェスチャーを使った。間違うこともあったけれど、トライし続けた。
今は何とかコーチとコミュニケーションがとれるようになった。言いたいことがあれば、英語で言えるようになった。その一方で、私の英語力はまだまだです。もっと英語を勉強しなければと思うこともある。
