Have you ever heard the word “tricycle”? If you don’t know its meaning, don’t worry.[ ] I think you know the word “triangle”, and a “triangle” has three angles. Yes, “tri” means “three”. Also, “cycle” means “wheels”. Now, you understand the meaning of “tricycle”, don’t you?
ア For example, if a word begins with “bi”, it means “two”.
イ So, the word “bicycle” means that it has two cycles.
ウ Some parts of English words give us a hint of their meanings.
エ Then, let’s go back to the question.
「三輪車」という言葉を聞いたことがあるだろうか。その意味を知らなくても心配はいらない。[ ]トライアングルという言葉はご存知だと思う、そしてトライアングルは3つの角を持っています。そう、「tri 」は「3」という意味です。また「cycle」は「車輪」という意味です。これで「三輪車」の意味がわかりましたね？
ア 例えば、「bi 」で始まる単語は 「2 」を意味する。
イ つまり、「自転車 」という言葉は、2つのサイクルがあることを意味している。
ウ 英単語のいくつかの部分は、その意味のヒントを与えてくれる。

Im thinking of making 6 groups of 7 people. Every group has an exchange student, so all of us will have a chance to speak English.

Mr. Davis:
But some of your classmates may not speak English because they are afraid ofmaking mistakes. Why don’t you put [ ] in each group? They will help other students to communicate in English.

I chose three animes, and asked our club members which one they agree with the most. Look at the voting results.

Those results tell us how popular each anime is. Hmm, it shows that Blazer Moon [ 1 ] than Shingeki no Kobito.

Yumi:
Yes. Some students think Shingeki no Kobito is a little bit scary.

Butsumetsu no Yaiba is the most popular. But some students disagree with that.
They say, “Some parents don’t [ 2 ] to watch it because its battle scene is violent.”

Yumi:
I understand that opinion. Of course, we should choose the anime our members agree with the most. However, it’s not a good idea to perform a play which is not good for children. I think Blazer Moon is the best.
その意見は理解できます。もちろん、メンバーが一番納得するアニメを選ぶべきでしょう。しかし、子供にとって良くない劇を上演するのは良くない。僕は『ブレイザームーン』がベストだと思いますよ。

Last year, because of the COVID-19, we couldn’t go to school. We had to do online lessons at home. Let’s talk about “the good points and the bad points of online lessons.” Taishi, please tell us about your ideas.
昨年はCOVID-19のせいで学校に行けなかった。家でオンラインレッスンをすることになった。「オンラインレッスンの良い点、悪い点 “について話しましょう。大志君の考えを聞かせてください。
Taishi:
OK, well, I think online lessons are good for me. I’ve used my PC for nine years, and I can use it very easily. It is convenient to study online at home. Some of the online lessons are recorded. I can see these lessons anytime and repeatedly. It’s also good to stop and think. So, I think [ 1 ]
そうだね、オンラインレッスンは僕に合っていると思う。PCは9年間使っているし、とても簡単に使える。家でオンラインで勉強できるのは便利です。オンラインレッスンのいくつかは録画されています。いつでも繰り返し見ることができます。また、立ち止まって考えることもできます。だから私は[ 1 ]だと思います。
Ryota:
You say online lessons are good for you, but not for me. I don’t have a PC at home. I used my smartphone to see online lessons. After looking at the small screen for a long time, my eyes got tired. PC screens are better than smartphone screens. Students should not watch small screens longer than fifteen minutes! So,[ 2 ]

Satomi:
There are other problems with batteries and gigabytes. My smartphone is old. My parents bought it for me when I was a junior high school student. So, while I’m seeing online lessons with my smartphone, the batteries often die. Also, I share gigabytes with my father, mother, brother, and sister. So, my family can’t use their smartphones when I see too many online lessons. [ 3 ].
バッテリーやギガバイトの問題は他にもある。私のスマートフォンは古い。中学生のときに親に買ってもらったんです。だから、スマートフォンでオンラインレッスンを見ていると、バッテリーがよく切れるんです。また、父、母、兄、姉とギガバイトを共有しています。だから、オンラインレッスンを見すぎると、家族がスマートフォンを使えなくなるんです。[ 3 ]

Today, we talked about “the good points and the bad points of online lessons.” It is good and convenient to study online if we [ A ]. However, with smartphones, there are a lot of problems, such as [ B ], batteries, and gigabytes.

I like to look at the sun, the moon, and the stars in the sky in the morning and at night. They are all so beautiful, but very far. I feel like I want to go and touch them. My future dream is to become an astronaut.
私は朝も夜も、空に浮かぶ太陽や月、星を眺めるのが好きだ。どれもとても美しいけれど、とても遠い。行ってみたい、触れてみたいという気持ちになる。将来の夢は宇宙飛行士になることです。
How many people have ever been to space? Do you know the answer? About 550 people have been there, 490 men and 60 women in total. Why do fewer women visit space than men?
宇宙に行ったことのある人は何人いるだろうか？答えはわかりますか？男性490人、女性60人の計550人です。なぜ宇宙を訪れる女性は男性より少ないのでしょうか？
One of my role models is Valentina Tereshkova. She was the first female astronaut. She was bom in a village near Moscow, Russia, in 1937. Her parents had three children. Her father died during World War II when she was two years old. Her mother had to work to support her children. They were not rich. After she left school, she began to work in a factory like her mother. She was very [ 1 ] and joined a local skydiving club as a hobby. She fell in love with skydiving, and her love for skydiving brought her to the space flight program in her country. She was so brave that she decided to go to space. Luckily, she was chosen from hundreds of women. She had to learn how to use rockets and a spaceship in a short time. And in 1963, at the age of 26, she went around the Earth for 48 hours alone. No one, not even her mother, knew she was travelling into space until they heard about her success on TV and the radio. She became the youngest woman to be in space. She was not rich and she didn’t have a chance for a good life and education, but she had a very big dream and achieved her goals.

She never entered space again, and hers was the last space flight by a woman until the 1980s. She said, “A bird cannot fly with one wing only. Human space flight cannot develop any further without the [ 1 ] participation of women.” I like her idea. Now she is 84 and she is still [ 1 ]. She wants to travel to Mars, even if 2 it is a one-way trip; it may be impossible to come back. She says,
“Space is my life.”
From her life, I learned two things. First, we have to try everything we want to do. We can open the door to a new world by trying things we are interested in. Second, it is important for us to help each other.
When I become an astronaut, I will see how Earth looks from above because it looks beautiful in pictures.
彼女は二度と宇宙に行くことはなく、1980年代まで女性による最後の宇宙飛行となった。鳥は片翼だけでは飛べない。有人宇宙飛行は、女性の参加なしにはこれ以上発展しないのです。私は彼女の考えが好きだ。現在、彼女は84歳で、いまだに[ 1 ]です。たとえ片道であっても、火星に行きたいという。彼女は言う、
